Two oceanography researchers from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu have been awarded a substantial international research grant totalling RM3.9 million to undertake an ambitious mangrove restoration initiative. Associate Prof Dr Behara Satyanarayana from the Institute of Oceanography and Environment and Dr Giovanna Wolswijk from the Faculty of Marine Science and Environment will lead the REVIVE project, which aims to combine ecological rehabilitation with socioeconomic benefits for Malaysia's coastal communities.
The funding comes from the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate, supported by the United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. This backing reflects growing international recognition that mangrove conservation represents a critical frontier in both climate action and sustainable development across Southeast Asia. The three-year project, commencing July 2026, will concentrate efforts on four strategically important mangrove zones: the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Perak, the river systems of Sungai Acheh and Sungai Chenaam in Penang, and the Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu.
Mangrove ecosystems occupy a unique position in Malaysia's natural and economic landscape. These coastal forests serve as natural barriers against storm surge and coastal erosion, a function that has become increasingly vital as climate-related extreme weather events intensify across the region. The project incorporates practical habitat restoration measures designed to reverse specific degradation patterns, including addressing sand deposition that has smothered mangrove seedlings in certain locations, and identifying pathways toward sustainable mangrove-based industries that do not compromise ecological integrity.

The selection of these four mangrove zones reflects their ecological significance and restoration potential. Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu constitute a biodiversity hotspot of regional significance. Collectively, these sites provide diverse contexts for testing and refining restoration approaches that might subsequently scale to other threatened mangrove areas.
The implications extend beyond Malaysia's borders. Mangrove ecosystems span the wider Southeast Asian region, facing remarkably similar pressures across Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Research outcomes from the REVIVE project will generate transferable knowledge about effective restoration practices, community engagement models, and value chain development strategies applicable throughout the region. In this sense, Malaysia's investment—or more accurately, the international community's investment channelled through Malaysian institutions—serves broader regional climate and development objectives.
The three-year timeline provides adequate duration for meaningful ecological recovery to manifest while maintaining focus and funding continuity. Mangrove regeneration typically requires years to produce measurable results, and the project structure appears designed to capture these changes whilst sustaining community engagement through completion. The detailed focus on value chain fairness distinguishes this initiative from purely conservation-oriented approaches, explicitly acknowledging that restoration sustainability depends partly on ensuring that economic benefits from mangrove-based activities flow more equitably to harvesting communities rather than concentrating among intermediaries and corporations.
