Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on all parties, particularly government staff, to steer clear of disrespectful or unbecoming language when making statements to the public. Her remarks came during a media briefing in Putrajaya on June 15 following her opening of an industry dialogue on journalism and media responsibility.
Teo stressed that officials should also sidestep matters touching on the three Rs — race, religion and royalty — both during election periods and in day-to-day operations. "My advice to everyone is not to use inappropriate language and to avoid 3R issues, not only during election campaigns but at all times," she said.
The minister's comments were prompted by recent criticism of Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, director-general of the Department of Community Communications (J-KOM), who faced allegations of employing unsuitable language in his public communications since his appointment on June 9. Mohd Hisyamuddin replaced Datuk Ismail Yusop in the role.
Teo indicated she has not yet had the opportunity to discuss the matter directly with Mohd Hisyamuddin to share her guidance on appropriate conduct for public servants.
